Journalism is in a weird place, so we’re doing something weird.
We all once worked at TechCrunch, a wonderful place we loved and did tons of good reporting at. Unfortunately, like so many other outlets, TC has been bled dry by corporate ineptitude and is now being ground under the bedazzled bootheel of private equity.
As we departed or were ejected from the mothership, some of us moved on to other industries, some other outlets, others are still looking for work. But we decided we wanted to keep working together and writing, even (perhaps especially) if it was purely for our own joy and satisfaction, with no possibility of making money.
So we started the New Tech Collective as an outlet for this purpose. It’s going to be a blog like the one we had for years, plus some newsletters for ease of consumption. We’ll cover tech, politics, culture, science, climate, media… pretty much anything we think is important. And we will do it our way, with no punches pulled and no interference from moneyed overlords. (Though this means some writers have to stay anonymous for now.)
If it’s on NTC, you can be sure we care about it and we think you should too. We’re not making any money off this and probably never will.
This is a standard blog but we also offer a Substack that we will update weekly with a digest of stories for the week. Sign up below.
